Sailor Nethra, who has qualified for the upcoming Paris Olympics, received a cheque of Rs 25 lakh from SRM IST

Sailor Nethra Kumanan, who has qualified for the upcoming Paris Olympics, was honoured by the SRM IST management recently. Dr TR Paarivendhar, honourable MP and founder & Chancellor, SRM Institute of Science and Technology handed over a cheque of Rs 25 Lakh to Chennai-born Nethra, who will be taking part in the women's dinghy (ILCA 6) event in the Paris Olympics. 

Prof. C. Muthamizhchelvan, vice chancellor DR S Ponnuswamy, Registrar Dr R Mohana krishnan, director (sports), and parents of Nethra, CV Kumanan and Sreeja Kumanan were also present during the occasion.

Nethra, who competed in the Tokyo Olympics, made it to the Paris event  with her super show in the Emerging Nations Program banner at the Last Chance Regatta, which is an Olympic Qualifier, in Hyeres, France. It  happened to be the final qualifying event in sailing for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Nethra, who completed her B Tech in Mechanical Engineering from SRM IST and is currently pursuing her MBA in the college, said that the support and encouragement from the institution was one of the important reasons to "fare well at the international level in sailing."

Dr Paarivendhar mentioned that the institution spends "more than Rs 25 crore per year on athletes and infrastructure."  He also added that they have been working on a swimming pool that has been "built matching international standards and cann even host Olympic events." He also added that the gallery of the new swimming pool would be named after Nethra Kumanan.

Swapna wins Noiseil Chess Tournament

CN Swapna, a second year B.Sc. Biotechnology student at the SRM IST, won the Group B Noiseil Chess Tournament in Paris, France, recently. Swapna secured seven and a half points at the end of round nine to win the tournament with Boulahfa Hicham and Aadith R finishing second and third.
