Jithin Arjunan of Dindigul district impressed with his all-round abilities adding long jump gold to his 100m title
Jithin Arjunan of Dindigul district impressed with his all-round abilities as he added the School Boys long jump gold to his 100m triumph in the CM Trophy 2024 on Sunday.
Jithin, who won the 100m gold with a time of 10.72s on Saturday, jumped 7.20m to clinch the gold medal with Jeya Paranesh of Theni (7.03m) taking home the silver and Kadambeeswarar from Coimbatore district (6.72m) bagging the bronze.
"Once I'm on the field, I can adjust my performance according to the skills of my competitors,” said Jithin, who has also participated in national-level competitions and won medals.
He set a National record by jumping 7.61 meters in the U-16 category at the South Asian Games. At a State-level school competition, he achieved a State record by leaping to 7.32 metres.
Jithin, who studies at SMBM Metric School in Dindigul, was inspired to take up athletics by his father, Chandrasekar, who is also a former national-level athlete.
Speaking about his journey, Jithin said, "Until the 10th grade, my father was my coach, and now I'm being trained by Coach Riyas. I practise daily from 5 to 7 in the morning. My dream is to become a top athlete and represent India at international events like the Olympics.”
“Although participating in international competitions is a goal, I find more joy in competing and winning at the Chief Minister's Cup. Competing against athletes from various parts of Tamil Nadu is always exciting,” he added.
The 2024 CM Trophy will witness over 33,000 participants from 38 districts and will compete across five categories – school, college students, public, government employees and differently-abled persons -- in 36 sports disciplines.
Chennai’s Sadhana Ravi took the girls gold with a jump of 5.44m while Bavatharani of Dharmapuri (5.43m) and Shri Hanisha of Coimbatore (5.29m) won silver and bronze, respectively.
In college Kabaddi competition, Erode women and Salem men took home the gold medals.
Erode women dominated the competition and won all their three matches while Salem men pipped Chengalpattu on better points as both the teams won two matches and lost one.
Table toppers Chennai have taken their tally to close to 100 with 38 gold, 25 silver and 29 bronze medals (at the time of writing). Salem is second and Erode third on the table.
