Defending champions Chennai continue to top the medal leaderboard
Adarshini Shri NB of Vellore and Sachin JT of Coimbatore clinched the badminton schools girls and boys singles gold medals in the CM Trophy 2024 on a day when incessant rains battered the State.
Adarshini defeated Rajarajeshwari J of Sivagangai 21-13, 21-4 in the girls’ singles final while Sachin JT got the better of Rishivanth C A of Tiruppur 21-15, 15-21, 21-14 in the boys’ singles final.
The 2024 CM Trophy is one of the largest grassroot initiatives of the State government and this edition has attracted over 11 lakh participants from 38 districts and will compete across five categories – school, college students, public, government employees and differently-abled persons -- in 36 sports disciplines.
Defending champions Chennai continue to top the leaderboard with 59 gold, 40 silver and 43 bronze while Chengalpattu is a distant second with 12 gold, 17 silver and 17 bronze.
Salem district, who are currently third in the standings, managed to close the gap with Chengalpattu by winning the women's handball gold with Kancheepuram and Chennai bagging silver and bronze respectively. Salem men could only grab the silver medal as Trichirappalli took home the gold and Vellore the bronze.
Trichirappalli also bagged the school boys hockey gold on a better goal difference as three teams finished with five points each, registering one win and two draws. Ramnathapuram took home the silver while Thirunelveli clinched the bronze medal.
